From Video Game influences, Pen and Paper Roleplaying Games, and even Movies. Here are plenty of examples spanning 20 years or on and off journal entries and even citing that dreaming in Star Wars themed dreams from early childhood. Long before the science supported it, it was self-evident that external influences in our waking life influences the content of our dream life.
An 1998 Star Wars-themed lucid dream:
Excerpt: I looked exactly like Luke Skywalker and had a helmet on, with
the orange and white spacesuit. I have a targeting computer and dive into
battle. I open fire on a Tie-Fighter and it blows up in a blaze of glory.
There are laser blasts hitting my ship and the ship rocks. I dive towards
the Death Star and flew into the trench where the exhaust pipe should be

Fast forward to 2014 and how did this skill evolve with Star Wars that started my interest in training to dream this way?
“Well don’t just stand there, get moving!” he commands so I run with him following him back to the base.
This is where there Bobo Fett, just like in the movies with blaster and rockets flying up and shooting the crap out of people. There is pure pandemonium here. I use force powers and pull off his rocket back, and Fett crashes to the ground and turns and fires blaster fire my way.
I don’t have time to block it but manage to move left/right bending out of the way. I then push him back using a force push, and he slides like 200 feet backwards into a crowd of republic soldiers.
There is so much action going on, it was like that really crowded scene in the new Star Wars with all the Jedi running amock with light-sabers everywhere and blaster fire coming from every direction. Really, it was too chaotic but having force powers did make it easier to navigate through the fight.
What about pen-and-paper role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons or Gurps? Well here are some examples from 1999.
Turning into a 7′ 4″ Minotaur and raiding an Orc Village from 1999
Excerpt: Then I spot a band of goblinoid creatures stalking our camp, hiding behind some thickets. I immediately alarm my party and we charge the opposing group. I swing my huge battle ax and cleave one of the goblin creatures clear in half, there is a loud clinking sound as the blade cleaves into his armor and renders the goblin in half. Blood and guts spray from the blow and the creature drops.

Turning into a female rogue half-elf space pirate and engaging in epic space battles and fun role-play.
Excerpt: I create myself a female rouge fighter on a large space-bound
vessel. It’s another campaign much like GURPS. My character is a half-elf
that looks hot with nice red hair, slim frame, 5′ 6″. And the voice was
the whole reason I created her, it’s soft, cute and whiney tones
accompanied by the rough rogue attitude made her an attractive and fun
character to be.

What about more current video games like World of Warcraft? Ever want to become one of your characters and transform your dream body into that avatar? If I can turn my dream avatar into a 7’4″ Minotaur and a 5’6 female half-elf space pirate with red hair, turning into my Orc Death Night was a breeze, as effortless as breathing in 2017..
Excerpt: I cast a spell called Blood Plague, and this wave almost like a sphere of translucent red energy billows forward into the mob of skeletons and their bones light up with this corrosive red energy which starts to blacken. It had a sizzling, crackling sound and the skeletons would collapse into a pile of bones.

Ever play Fallout 3 New Vegas and then dream about it? I sure did, actually, Fallout has been a very common theme for my dreams, not always had the time to write them down so here are a few examples.
Excerpt: I was in the same wasteland duster as I saw on the character from third-person perspective. I was now holding a single-shot shotgun in my hands with a nice wooden stalk. I cracked the barrel open and there was a round already in the chamber. I had an ammo belt full of shells around my chest and waist.

How about conjuring up some Ghouls from Fallout 4 as you warp the fabric of dream space with your empowered imagination gained from playing video games?
Excerpt: This ghoulish zombie shambles up, it’s flesh is pale and there is a strong color of green on the skin. I can see its dried out rib cage, the eye sockets are deep but the face looks very similar to Eddie the Head, the Iron Maiden mascot.

How about dreaming in the Cell Shaded goodness that is Borderlands? Here is a borderlands 2 inspired lucid dream:
Excerpt: I turn my attention to my hands and start to shift them into cell shading, and leather gloves form around them with buckle straps along the arms. I create a sniper rifle with a scope very accurate to how they look in the game.
I look at the owner and think he would be more suited as Marcus the Gun dealer and I transform him into the character voice and all. I make the whole dream envelop this Borderlands 2 Genre down to the very cartoon coloring and artform.

Why stop at Borderlands 2 when Borderlands 3 is now out? Here is a Dream Journal Vlog where I am at Moxies in the fullness that is the Borderlands 3 Genre.
What about some Red Dead Redemption 2?
It doesn’t have to be Video Games that influence your dreams, Genre Specific Dreaming or Genre Specific Lucid Dreaming is limited only by your imagination. The secret is in exploiting the well-studied fact that we dream based on real-world influences. Watch a horror movie, have a nightmare. Control those influences and start to dream in fantasy, sci-fi, romance, action, comedy by using waking life experiences as paint for your dreams.
I’ve played Dungeons and Dragons on and off since I was 12 years old, still play 5e to this day once every couple of months with friends. Dungeons and Dragons has simply become paint for my dream life as I enjoy dungeon crawls, fantasy creatures so it was the right fit for stimulating my dream imagination as you can see from my above 1999 post and it goes back well into when I first started playing in 1984. I still dream quite often in Dungeons and Dragons themed dreams because I love role-playing, I love art and I love fantasy.
Here are some examples of Dungeon and Dragon inspired Dreams.
Becoming the GM in a dream and creating a D&D adventure! 2016
Excerpt: Unlike pen-and-paper D&D as an example, the entire dream world changed to a tavern and my friends now became genre-specific player characters. One of the women became an elf with blond hair and classic green leather armor, bow. Another person became a wizard. It was like being in one of the Lord of the Ring movies with how crisp the detail was.

I became my Arcane Trickster Trickster from D&D. 2019
Excerpt: I end up banding together with a small party of adventurers and we set out to investigate a rumor of an evil necromancer that is foiling the land and bringing an unnatural evil to the hamlet.
